Healthy Changes to Our School Cafeterias:
The Shell Lake School District cafeteria is meeting tough new federal nutrition standards for school meals to ensure that meals are healthy and well balanced. School meals offer students milk, fruits, vegetables, proteins and grains. The meals must meet strict limits on saturated fat and portion sizes. Starting in this school year, school lunches will meet standards requiring:
-
Age-appropriate calorie limits
-
Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least ½ cup of produce)
-
A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
-
Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored must be fat-free)
-
More whole grains
-
Less sodium
We are working to offer Shell Lake School District students healthier and tastier choices. We will be purchasing some locally grown produce through West Wind Community Co-op and also through Smith Apple Orchard. You may visit www.schoolnutrition.org for more information and facts about school meals.
*Breakfast is served each day. LAKER sandwiches are available to grades 7-12.
