The purpose statement for the School District of Shell Lake's Athletic Program, as found in the Coaches Handbook and in the Extra Curricular Policy book:
The purpose of Shell Lake athletics is to enhance the educational goals of the Shell Lake School District by emphasizing the physical, mental, and character development of each athlete.
Letter Requirements for Shell Lake Athletics
FOOTBALL

Asst. Coach: Jim Herman, Josh Schmidt, Ben Graese, Tom Schäffer
MS Coach: Jesse Jensen
A player can earn a football letter the following ways:
- 1) Have perfect attendance (no unexcused absence or tardy) throughout the season.
- 2) Play in 18 quarters of varsity football.
- 3) Coach Johnson reserves the right to letter any player that does not fulfill the criteria above.
*Players must finish the season in good standing to receive a letter or additional awards.

BOYS BASKETBALL
GIRLS BASKETBALL

Boys Head Coach: Ben Graese
Boys JV Coach: Ben Kunselman
Boys MS Coach: Tom Dettle
1) Have perfect attendance throughout the season (meaning the player has zero excused or unexcused absences/tardiness).
2) Play in 24 halves of varsity basketball.
3) Coach Graese reserves the right to letter any player that does not fulfill the criteria above.
*Players must finish the season in good standing to receive a letter or additional awards.
Schedule Note: All NON-Double Header games are scheduled: JV @ 5:45 and Var @ 7:15 PM. DOUBLE HEADER NIGHTS: The time listed is the VARSITY start time; the JV will play opposite of the Varsity

WRESTLING

JV Coach:
1) Must participate in one half of the varsity matches, acquire a total of 30 team points or qualify for the sectional championship.
2) Final decision is at the discretion of the head coach.

TRACK
|
Head Coach: Katrina Granzin
Individuals must compete in one of the following:
1. Earn 25 or more points in competition according to point scale: 2 points for each meet you compete in; 1 point for each personal record from a previous event; 1-10 points earned for placing in a meet; 5 points for individual all-conference; 5 points for team all-conference; Points for placing a sectional and state double
2. Score points for team @ conference, regionals or sectional meets
3. Set school record, either individual or a relay
4. Have no more than one unexcused absences while attending all meets and practices
5. Finish the season in good standing with a positive attitude
The track coach reserves the right to letter any team member, regardless of point totals if he/she believes that the team member is deserving of the recognition (This step may be used in times of illness, injury, etc.) Students must end the season in good standing in order to receive a letter.

1) Playing in one half of the total innings played in a season of varsity baseball
2) Final decision is at the discretion of the head coach
3) Participate in the Youth Baseball Clinic

VOLLEYBALL
|

Asst. Coach:
1) Must have played in one half of the varsity games played during the season
2) Must finish the season in good standing - according to the athletic code
3) If a senior is asked to play JV, a letter may be earned if the athlete has given all four years of dedication to the sport
4) Final decision is up to the coach

CROSS COUNTRY

Head Coach: Sarah Skinner
Asst. Coach: Sharon Ricci
1. Earn 20 or more points in competition according to point scale; 2 points for each meet you compete in; 1 point for each personal record from a previous year; 1 point for each time you medal/place in a meet; 1 additional point for each time you place first in a meet; 2 points for placing at conference or sectionals.; 5 points for placing at state; 10 points for making the podium at state.

1) Play in half of the total innings played in a season of varsity softball
2) Finish the season in good standing

SOCCER
|
Head Coach: Co-op with Spooner RAILS Soccer
1) A player must play in "half of the halves" with no minimum time for each appearance in varsity matches
2) In addition, participation from a prior year in varsity matches also qualifies toward earning a varsity letter

Requirements for all athletes, including Cheerleading if applicable: To receive a letter you must finish the season in good standing, unless the student was injured and had met the requirements set for each sport prior to the injury. All coaches have final decision on their discretion to letter an athlete.
