Forensics Categories Explained
Extemporaneous Speaking: Provides a direct response to a question that the participant draws. Use information from magazines to organize your speech in a 30 minute time limit. 4x6 card, both sides. Seven (7) minute time limit for speech.
Farrago: Select material from a varitey of genres which address a central specific theme and to interept the material through oral presentation. Ten (10) minute time limit. Use of script.
Four Minute Speaking: Present well developed material which has the primary intent of informing, although persuasive elements may be present. One 4x6 card.
Group Interpretive Reading: Present a literary script in such a manner that the audience imagines the action being described rather than witnessing a performance. 2-5 readers. Twelve (12) minute time limit. Use of script.
Moments in History: Exploration of history by researching records, diaries, personal interview, letters, newspapers, etc. May use a visual material to enhance the speech. Six (6) minute time limit. Use of one 4x6 card. Topic for 2002-2003: A World in Transition: 1830-1850.
Poetry Reading: Select and present a poem or group of poems centering on a specific theme or emotion. Eight (8) minute time limit. May be original work. Use of script.
Prose Reading: Selection from prose literature, short stories, cutting from novels, drama, essays, centering on a specific theme or emotion is to be read. Eight (8) minute time limit. Use of script.
Solo Acting: Cutting from serious or humorous drama. Can use one satationary chair. Eight (8) minutes. Must be memorized.
Storytelling: Chronological events of a story in a coherant, unified, clear and interesting manner. One story from each of five categories: 1) Story abot Clothing 2) Story about an Invention 3) Story from Latin America/South America Culture 4) Story with magic or magicians 5) Story that has a moral. Must be memorized. 8 minute time limit. Must sit in a chair.
Play Acting: Cutting from literature, performed dramatically. No props, except table and chairs. 2-5 actors. Twelve (12) minute time limit. Must be memorized.
Demonstration: Explains how to do something or how something works. Objects or physical activity be the demonstrator must be exhibited. 10 minute time limit. Use of one 4x6 card, both sides.
Radio Speaking: The speaker is to present a well organized newscast. Must cut 20 minutes worth of radio news material to present an exact 5 minute newscast EXACTLY. Thirty (30) minutes to prepare.
Public Address: Provide a well developed statement which is directly responsive to a question about that issue. Eight (8) minute time limit. One 4x6 card.
